A Statement From JDI<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n On\u00a0<\/span>March 16, 2021, a white gunman in Atlanta Georgia went on a killing spree<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>targeting<\/span>\u00a0members<\/span>\u00a0of the Asian community<\/span>, killing\u00a0<\/span>six\u00a0<\/span>women<\/span>\u00a0and two men<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0placing\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0blame on the victims\u00a0<\/span>themselve<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Meanwhile<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>too<\/span>\u00a0many are\u00a0<\/span>attempting to divorce this one person\u2019s actions from the broader cultural and systemic context in which this horror occurred<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The lives of Delaina Ashley Yaun,\u00a0<\/span>Xiaoj<\/span>i<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>an,\u00a0<\/span>Daoyou<\/span>\u00a0Feng,\u00a0<\/span>Paul Andre\u00a0<\/span>Michels<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Julie<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Park,<\/span>\u00a0Hy<\/span>u<\/span>n<\/span>–<\/span>J<\/span>eong<\/span>\u00a0Park Grant<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and two others whose names have not yet been shared\u00a0<\/span>matte<\/span>r<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0been here before<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0 A<\/span>nd until white people radically transform\u00a0<\/span>themselves\u00a0<\/span>and commit to disrupting white supremacy culture<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we will be back here again<\/span>:\u00a0<\/span>Mourning the death<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 or deaths \u2013 of\u00a0<\/span>other Black, brown, Asian, indigenous or other persons of color, immigrants,<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0L<\/span>GBQTIAA+ identified\u00a0<\/span>folx<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Let us be clear.\u00a0<\/span>M<\/span>inimizing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>outright<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>d<\/span>ismiss<\/span>al of<\/span>\u00a0the racist, sexist,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>xenoph<\/span>ob<\/span>ic<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>beliefs and\u00a0<\/span>v<\/span>alues<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>led to this violent attack<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n These women were targeted and killed not only because they were Asian but because they worked at a place that is often assumed to be associated with or may have been connected to the sex trade industry. Everyone deserves to live, work, and thrive free of discrimination, hate and violence.\u00a0When JDI advocates for safety as well as decriminalizing of survivors, we also acknowledge the vulberability of sex workers who have long been invisibilized and denigrated as \u201cunrespectable\u201d or disposable.<\/span><\/p>\n The painful reality is that since the pandemic, Asian American communities have suffered violence and racist attacks at higher rates than ever before. And unsurprisingly, it\u2019s women and nonbinary people who are disproportionately harmed by this bigotry. In fact, Asian women have reported twice as many hate incidents over the past year. [“Stop AAPI Hate National Report\u201d]<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n A lot has been written and shared\u00a0<\/span>regarding<\/span>\u00a0the history and current manifestations of Anti-Asian\u00a0<\/span>racism<\/span>\u00a0in the United States. Below\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>links to a few statements,\u00a0<\/span>including\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>one\u00a0<\/span>of\u00a0<\/span>JDI\u2019s members the Asian Task Force A<\/span>gainst Domestic Violenc<\/span>e<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n We invite you to read, share, engage in conversation with each other and with JDI, support community-based solutions, demand justice, and join us in solidarity\u00a0<\/span>with Asian communities now and into the future.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n It is not lost on us that while news of the killings in Atlanta was\u00a0<\/span>unfolding<\/span>, the U.S. House of Representatives was voting on two critical pieces of legislation that address\u00a0<\/span>gender-based violence. While we can take comfort that the\u00a0<\/span>entire Massachusetts Delegation joined the\u00a0<\/span>House\u00a0<\/span>in voting\u00a0<\/span>overwhelmingly to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and secure funding for services through the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA<\/span>), t<\/span>hese bills\u00a0<\/span>did<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>n<\/span>ot\u00a0<\/span>pass<\/span>\u00a0unanimously.\u00a0 There\u00a0<\/span>were those who objected to addressing the needs of culturally specific communities and\u00a0<\/span>creating alternatives to the limited and sometimes harmful criminal legal responses<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Channel your anger and sadness into confronting white supremacy head-on, building power and educating, engaging, and mobilizing our communities into action\u2014so that we heed AAPI community members’ warnings and ensure that we don’t leave anyone else vulnerable to white supremacist violence.<\/span><\/p>\n Don\u2019t wait.\u00a0 Be part of the solution.
