Organizations that support sexual assault victims refer to this time of year as the\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/metoomvmt.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/1.5.11_The-Red-Zone-Sexual-Violence-on-College-Campuses_INFOSHEET_V2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-external=\"\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">\u201cRed Zone\u201d<\/a>\u00a0because it\u2019s when students on campus are most vulnerable to sexual violence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch shows that\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/rainn.org\/statistics\/campus-sexual-violence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-external=\"\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">more than 50%<\/a>\u00a0of all college sexual assaults take place during this time between the beginning of the fall semester and Thanksgiving break,\u201d according to Jane Doe Inc., The Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Boston Police Department, 44 cases of drink spiking have been reported so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, there were 108 cases reported for the full year. And in 2022, there were 107.<\/p>\n<p>Community is key to sexual assault prevention, Jane Doe Inc. told GBH News. The organization added that many of its member programs serve as\u00a0<a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/pcar.org\/about-sexual-violence\/campus-sexual-assault\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-external=\"\" data-cms-ai=\"0\">resources for college campuses<\/a>, where students can learn more about awareness, risk reduction and response.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading heading-5\">Recommendations for how to stay safe<\/h3>\n<p>Drugs such as rohypnol, aka roofies, gamma-hydroxybutyric acid and ketamine are scentless, colorless and flavorless. These drugs can result in disorientation and potential loss of consciousness, which can leave victims vulnerable to sexual assault.<\/p>\n<p>Boston Police spokesman Sgt. Detective John Boyle encourages people in social settings to create a \u201cbuddy system\u201d to prevent getting separated.<\/p>\n<p>Other tips for staying safe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Be sure that your drink is being served directly by the bartender or your server.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t allow people you don\u2019t know or trust to order drinks and deliver them to you.<\/li>\n<li>Watch your drink at all times. Never leave your drink unattended.<\/li>\n<li>Take your drink with you to the restroom if need be.<\/li>\n<li>Keep your hand covered over your drink when you\u2019re not looking at it. Many creative inventions exist that can help you cover your drink.<\/li>\n<li>Get help immediately if you begin to feel dizzy, nauseated, light-headed, or strange in any way.<\/li>\n<li>Please be aware of any uncharacteristic behavior from your acquaintances and be wary of strangers attempting to lure individuals away from their friends.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Police urge victims to report all incidents. When incidents are reported, police say they can investigate further and follow up on any suspects or locations of alleged assaults and further protect the public from further assaults or drink spiking from occurring.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"heading heading-5\">Addressing the problem<\/h3>\n<p>Advocates say there\u2019s room for improvement when it comes to responding to drugging incidents.<\/p>\n<p>Victims are often refused testing at hospitals if they did not report a sexual assault or rape, according to state Sen.
